Rawalpindi, November 18, 2024-Schools in several parts of Punjab are set to reopen tomorrow following an improvement in the smog situation, according to official reports on Monday.
The Punjab government, which had earlier announced the closure of schools from November 17 to 25 due to hazardous air quality, has now issued a notification permitting schools in the Rawalpindi Division to resume operations. This includes educational institutions in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, and Chakwal, where air pollution levels have eased significantly.
While some areas have seen relief, the situation remains dire in Lahore and other cities within the Lahore and Multan divisions. Lahore, recently ranked as the second most polluted city globally, recorded an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 497.
In response to the worsening smog, Lahore’s district administration has implemented strict measures, including a ban on outdoor activities such as sports, exhibitions, and events. Outdoor dining at restaurants has also been prohibited, though religious gatherings are exempt from these restrictions.
Additional measures include the closure of shops, markets, and malls by 8 PM, with exceptions for medical stores, laboratories, petrol stations, and grocery stores. Large department stores are allowed to operate only their grocery and medical sections during restricted hours.
Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner has urged residents to take necessary precautions, including avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities and wearing masks to reduce exposure to toxic air.
While the reopening of schools in some districts signals progress in managing the smog crisis, authorities continue to grapple with the broader challenge of air pollution across Punjab. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious as efforts to combat smog and its health impacts continue.
