Islamabad, November 18, 2024-Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman has emphasized the indispensable role of virtual private networks (VPNs) in supporting the country’s IT industry, stating that the sector cannot function effectively without them.
Speaking before the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, the PTA chairman highlighted VPNs as essential tools for businesses, freelancers, and even everyday users.
“Freelancers and companies require VPNs, and even the common man relies on such services,” Rehman stated. He urged IT professionals and businesses to register their VPNs by the extended deadline of November 30 to avoid disruptions.
The PTA initially introduced its VPN registration policy in 2016 but has recently intensified awareness efforts to ensure compliance. Rehman assured lawmakers that registered VPNs would not affect internet accessibility, noting, “The internet will never be shut down if VPNs are registered.”
Addressing concerns about misuse, the chairman explained that unregistered VPNs are often exploited to bypass internet restrictions and access prohibited content. However, he acknowledged the adverse impact of internet shutdowns on the IT sector, stating, “Whenever the internet has to be shut down, the industry suffers significantly.”
During the session, Senator Afnanullah expressed concerns about the potential fallout for freelancers if the policy were to hinder their work. He urged the PTA to consult the Attorney General of Pakistan and report back to the Senate. “Any move that negatively affects freelancers could be fatal for the IT sector,” he warned.
The PTA’s stance reflects a balancing act between enabling secure internet access for professionals and curbing misuse, a challenge that continues to shape Pakistan’s digital landscape.
