Islamabad, December 13, 2024: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday instructed authorities to further reduce electricity tariffs and expedite the implementation of future power generation projects. Chairing a high-level meeting to review the country’s electricity and power plans, the Prime Minister stressed prioritizing low-cost energy projects utilizing local resources.

During the briefing, the Prime Minister was updated on the progress of ongoing hydropower projects nationwide. Highlighting the benefits of low-cost energy, PM Shehbaz noted that such projects not only ensure affordable electricity but also contribute to an environmentally sustainable future.

The Prime Minister directed that the country’s existing electricity generation capacity be gradually transitioned to solar energy, underscoring Pakistan’s vast solar potential. “Globally, countries are increasingly shifting to environmentally friendly, low-cost solar power. Pakistan must capitalize on its solar energy potential,” he stated.

In addition, the Prime Minister reviewed efforts to phase out inefficient power plants, which consume excessive fuel but generate minimal electricity. He called for the immediate closure of such plants, emphasizing that this move would save valuable foreign exchange and reduce electricity costs for consumers.

PM Shehbaz also instructed strict action against officials obstructing reforms in the power sector. He emphasized the need to expedite upgrades to the electricity transmission system to meet international standards and implement modern technology for the selection and distribution of low-cost electricity.

“All measures for reforming the power sector must be completed within the specified timeline,” he directed.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Dr. Musadik Malik, Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik, and other senior officials.
