Islamabad, December 13, 2024: President Asif Ali Zardari has raised eight objections to the proposed Society Registration Act concerning the registration of madrassas, citing potential legal and international repercussions.
Sources revealed that the President pointed out that the Society Registration Act of 1860 does not include provisions for religious education, while it explicitly covers fine arts education, including dance and art classes. He warned that combining religious education and fine arts under the same act could lead to conflicts.
The President expressed concerns that if madrassas are registered under the Society Act, it could weaken legal oversight and increase the risk of arbitrary practices. He emphasized that the legislation should carefully consider international obligations.
Highlighting the global implications, President Zardari advised members of the assembly to frame a separate bill for madrassas while considering international standards. He cautioned that registering madrassas under the Society Act could raise red flags with organizations like FATF and impact Pakistan’s GSP status, potentially inviting sanctions.
The President stressed that approving the proposed bill in its current form could lead to severe international restrictions.
In response to the President’s objections, the Government of Pakistan has begun deliberations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is reportedly working to find a middle ground on the matter, ensuring both domestic and international concerns are addressed effectively.
