Lahore, January 8, 2025: Speculation over Saim Ayub’s inclusion in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy is expected to end soon, with reports indicating that the young opener will be named in the preliminary squad despite an ongoing injury.
With the ICC’s deadline for submitting preliminary squads set at midnight on January 11, 2025, Pakistan’s selectors are weighing their options while ensuring compliance with tournament regulations.
Saim Ayub’s availability became uncertain after he fractured his ankle during the second Test against South Africa. The left-handed opener is currently undergoing specialized treatment in England, with medical experts estimating a recovery period of up to six weeks.
Despite his injury, selectors are inclined to include Saim in the squad, given his potential impact on the team’s top order. Should he fail to regain full fitness in time, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will retain the option of seeking approval from the tournament’s technical committee to name a replacement.
Under ICC rules, teams can make changes to their squads without approval until February 11. However, starting February 12, any alterations will require prior clearance from the ICC Technical Committee.
