Karachi, January 17, 2025 – Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has successfully launched its first fully indigenous Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite into space from China. The launch took place at China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre on Friday and was broadcast live at SUPARCO’s Karachi complex, allowing millions of Pakistanis to witness this historic moment.

The EO-1 satellite is a landmark achievement in Pakistan’s space program. Equipped with a high-resolution camera, it is capable of capturing detailed images of Earth, which will support a wide range of applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster management, and agricultural productivity. This is the first satellite entirely designed and manufactured locally by SUPARCO’s engineers, showcasing Pakistan’s growing expertise and commitment to achieving self-reliance in space technology.

Zain Bukhari, a SUPARCO expert, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment, calling it a proud moment for the nation. He explained that the satellite had undergone rigorous testing to ensure its operational readiness. According to Bukhari, EO-1 is expected to play a vital role in several critical areas. It will enhance disaster management efforts by providing real-time data during natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes, enabling authorities to assess damage and respond more effectively. The satellite will also contribute to agricultural advancements by monitoring crop health, assessing irrigation needs, predicting yields, and bolstering food security initiatives.

Moreover, EO-1 will support urban development by tracking infrastructure growth, managing urban sprawl, and assisting in city and regional planning. It will also provide valuable data for environmental monitoring, offering updates on floods, landslides, deforestation, and land erosion. In addition, the satellite will aid in the extraction and conservation of natural resources by monitoring minerals, oil and gas fields, glaciers, and water reserves.

This achievement underscores Pakistan’s expanding capabilities in space technology and marks a significant step toward greater self-reliance in this field. The successful launch of EO-1 not only highlights the country’s technological advancements but also reinforces its commitment to addressing critical challenges such as environmental sustainability, disaster resilience, and food security. The EO-1 satellite stands as a testament to Pakistan’s progress in space exploration and its vision for a sustainable future.
