Islamabad, January 23, 2025: Pakistan has expressed its readiness to work with the newly inaugurated Trump administration to strengthen bilateral ties, the Foreign Office (FO) announced on Thursday.
“We are committed to fostering a strong and robust relationship with the United States, based on mutual respect and the principle of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs,” Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said during his weekly briefing in Islamabad.
Welcoming President Donald Trump’s assumption of office, Shafqat Ali Khan emphasized the significance of US-Pakistan relations, which span various areas of cooperation. “We look forward to maintaining and enhancing the positive trajectory of our partnership,” he added.
The spokesperson also raised concerns over the presence of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) sanctuaries in Afghanistan, urging Afghan authorities to address these issues. “Resolving these concerns is essential for realizing the full potential of Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral relations,” he said.
On the issue of Kashmir, Khan reiterated Pakistan’s consistent position, highlighting the ongoing “oppression campaign” in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He assured that Pakistan would support all efforts aimed at resolving the longstanding dispute in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, the spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its full implementation, including the treaty’s dispute resolution mechanisms. “We hope India will honor the treaty in good faith and ensure its comprehensive enforcement,” he stated.
In response to a question, Shafqat Ali Khan confirmed that an arrangement with the United States to resettle Afghan refugees remains in place, with plans to complete the process by September this year. “This arrangement continues as agreed,” he affirmed.
The FO’s remarks reflect Pakistan’s intent to strengthen ties with the United States while addressing key regional and bilateral challenges.
