KP government issues security alert for Maulana Fazlur Rehman, JUI-F slams move

Peshawar, February 16, 2025: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has issued a security alert for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, warning of potential threats to his life. However, the party has strongly criticized the move, accusing the government of spreading fear instead of ensuring security.

According to a letter issued by the KP police, Fazlur Rehman faces a serious security risk in the province, with intelligence suggesting that terrorists may target him due to his religious and political activities. In response, the police have advised the JUI-F chief and his party to restrict movements, enhance security, and report any unusual activity to authorities.

JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri termed the security alert “alarming” and accused the KP government of creating panic. He demanded clarity on what concrete steps had been taken to protect Fazlur Rehman, stating, “If the government cannot fulfill its responsibility, it should admit its failure. JUI-F workers know how to protect their leadership.”

He further alleged that the warning was politically motivated, coming just after the party’s successful peace jirga in Peshawar, which, according to him, had made the KP government “anxious.” Ghauri emphasized that the JUI-F would resist any attempt to distance the party and its leadership from the public.

“Our call for peace and stability should not be mistaken for weakness,” he added, urging the authorities to take real action instead of issuing mere warnings.

Meanwhile, sources indicate that the D.I. Khan police have specifically advised heightened security around Fazlur Rehman, reinforcing concerns over rising threats in the province. However, the JUI-F insists that such alerts should come with concrete protective measures rather than what they call an attempt to create fear.
