New Delhi, January 26, 2025: India celebrated its 76th Republic Day with a spectacular display of military strength, cultural heritage, and vibrant festivities at a grand parade held in the capital city of New Delhi. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended as the chief guest, marking a significant moment in the ties between the two nations.
The parade, the centerpiece of Republic Day celebrations, drew thousands to Rajpath Avenue—renamed Kartavya Path in 2022—to witness a dazzling showcase of India’s defense capabilities and cultural diversity. The event featured military displays including advanced missile systems and fighter jet flyovers demonstrated India’s military prowess. There were thrilling performances by armed forces motorbike units which captivated the audience. States across India presented elaborate tableaux showcasing their unique traditions and achievements during this ceremony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and other senior government officials attended the event, alongside international dignitaries.
“May this occasion strengthen our efforts towards preserving the ideals of our Constitution and working towards a stronger and prosperous India,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on the social media platform X.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, on his first state visit to India since assuming office in 2024, brought a 342-member band and marching contingent from the Indonesian National Armed Forces. This marked the first time Indonesian troops joined a foreign parade, symbolizing the deepening ties between the two nations.
India and Indonesia signed agreements to enhance cooperation in health, maritime security, and digital technology during Prabowo’s visit.
Modi highlighted the historical connection between the two countries, noting that Indonesia was the guest nation at India’s first Republic Day parade in 1950. Sukarno, Indonesia’s founding president, had attended as the guest of honor then. “It is a matter of great pride that Indonesia is part of the parade once again,” Modi remarked.
India’s Republic Day commemorates the adoption of its Constitution on January 26, 1950, nearly three years after gaining independence from British colonial rule. Inviting foreign heads of state to the parade has been a longstanding tradition, with notable past guests including French President Emmanuel Macron in 2024 and former US President Barack Obama in 2015.
The parade took place along Kartavya Path, a redeveloped avenue lined with lush lawns, canals, and rows of trees. Originally constructed during British rule, the avenue was renamed in 2022 as part of celebrations marking India’s 75th year of independence, symbolizing a shift from colonial legacy to national pride.
