Dubai, February 20, 2025: Muhammad Shami’s five wickets followed by Shubman Gill’s brilliant century powered India to a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their opening ICC Champions Trophy match at the Dubai International Stadium.
Chasing 229, India got off to a solid start with a 69-run opening stand between skipper Rohit Sharma (41 off 36) and Gill. Virat Kohli contributed 22, but India stumbled to 144/4 in 30.1 overs before KL Rahul (37*) joined Gill (108*) to guide them home with an unbeaten 87-run partnership.
For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain claimed two wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman took one each.
Earlier, Bangladesh struggled after opting to bat, collapsing to 35/5 in 8.3 overs. Towhid Hridoy (100 off 118) and Jaker Ali (68) revived the innings with a 151-run stand, but Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul (5/53) triggered a lower-order collapse, restricting Bangladesh to 228.
India will look to carry this momentum into their next match against arch rivals Pakistan on Sunday.
