Kabul, March 15, 2025: Sirajuddin Haqqani, the leader of the Haqqani Network and Afghanistan’s Interior Minister, has resigned from his position, submitting his resignation to Hibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of the Taliban regime.

According to Afghanistan International, which cited two well-informed sources within the Taliban, Haqqani’s resignation has been accepted. The move follows reports of internal disagreements within the Taliban leadership and Haqqani’s prolonged absence from public activities.

Reports suggest that growing rifts between the Haqqani Network and the Taliban’s central leadership—particularly over governance and women’s rights—may have contributed to his resignation.

Haqqani has reportedly relocated to Khost, a stronghold of his network, in a move that analysts say could indicate deepening divisions within the Taliban ranks.

As of now, the Taliban has not issued any formal statement on Haqqani’s resignation.

In June 2024, Haqqani was photographed in the United Arab Emirates, where he reportedly met with Gulf officials. Diplomat Magazine previously reported that Haqqani’s visit was an attempt to strengthen regional alliances and seek greater independence from Hibatullah Akhundzada’s influence.

Haqqani leads the Haqqani Network, a faction within the Taliban that has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States for carrying out major attacks against foreign and Afghan forces during the 20-year-long war in Afghanistan.

The situation remains fluid, with further developments anticipated in Afghanistan’s internal power dynamics.
