Islamabad, May 16, 2025: A severe heatwave continues to sweep across much of Pakistan, with temperatures expected to remain well above seasonal norms through the weekend, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned.
The extreme weather is being driven by a persistent high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which is forecast to sustain the current conditions for at least another three to four days.
According to the PMD, daytime temperatures in northern and central region, including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above average until May 19. In the southern parts of the country, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, temperatures may stay 4°C to 6°C above normal through May 20.
The heatwave is especially intense in southern and central districts, where Friday and Saturday are expected to bring extremely hot and dry conditions.
Over the past 24 hours, much of the country experienced sweltering weather, with the highest recorded temperatures reaching 48°C in Turbat and Dadu, and 47°C in Dera Ghazi Khan.
Major urban centres—including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Multan, and Peshawar—are forecast to endure daytime highs ranging between 40°C and 48°C throughout the weekend. Interior districts such as Dadu and Mohenjo-Daro may see temperatures exceed 50°C. Coastal cities like Karachi will remain hot and humid, compounding discomfort for residents.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and protecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The PMD continues to monitor the situation closely and has advised regional governments to activate heatwave contingency plans.
