Iran declares nuclear talks with U.S. ‘meaningless’ after Israeli strikes

Cairo, June 14, 2025: Iran has declared ongoing nuclear negotiations with the United States “meaningless” in the wake of Israel’s largest-ever military assault on Iranian territory, accusing Washington of tacitly supporting the strikes.

“The other side [the U.S.] has acted in a way that renders dialogue meaningless,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said, as quoted by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency. “You cannot claim to pursue negotiations while simultaneously allowing the Zionist regime to carry out attacks on Iranian soil.”

Baghaei accused Israel of manipulating the diplomatic process and alleged that the assault could not have occurred without U.S. approval. “Israel has succeeded in influencing the direction of the talks, and these strikes would not have been possible without Washington’s green light,” he added.

The remarks come after Israeli forces launched a series of powerful strikes on Iranian targets, resulting in significant casualties and the destruction of key military and nuclear facilities. Tehran has blamed Washington for enabling the attacks, though the United States has denied any involvement.

At a United Nations Security Council session, U.S. officials rejected Iran’s accusations and urged Tehran to resume nuclear negotiations. “It would be wise for Iran to return to the table,” a U.S. representative stated.

The sixth round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks was scheduled to take place Sunday in Muscat, Oman. However, in light of the recent escalation, the future of the talks remains uncertain.

Iran maintains that its uranium enrichment program is solely for civilian energy purposes and denies Israeli and Western allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters that his administration had prior knowledge of Israel’s plans but believed diplomacy with Iran was still possible. “We knew the strikes were coming, but we still see room for an agreement,” Trump said.

The latest tensions have cast a shadow over hopes for reviving diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington, with fears mounting that the situation could spiral into a broader regional conflict.
