Birmingham, July 3, 2025: India’s newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill delivered a historic performance on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, smashing his maiden double century and setting multiple records in the process.

Resuming on his overnight score of 114 not out, the 25-year-old displayed remarkable composure and flair to score a sensational 269 before being dismissed in the final session. His innings was studded with 30 fours and three sixes, propelling India to a commanding first-innings total of 587.

Gill’s innings marked the highest individual score by an Indian captain in Test cricket, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254* against South Africa in 2019. It also became the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test match in England, eclipsing Mohammad Azharuddin’s 179 in Manchester (1990).

He also broke the record for the highest Test score by an Indian in England, overtaking Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval in 1979. Notably, Gill became the first Indian to score 250 or more runs in a Test outside the subcontinent.

At 25 years and 298 days, Gill is now the second-youngest Indian captain to score a double hundred in Tests — behind Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who achieved the feat at 23 years and 39 days in 1964 against England.

Gill’s 269 is now the third-highest score by a visiting Test captain in England, behind Bob Simpson (311) and Graeme Smith (277) and the third-highest score for India in away Tests, after Virender Sehwag (309) and Rahul Dravid (270).

Gill also became the first Indian captain to score over 400 runs in an overseas Test series before turning 26. His latest century followed a superb 147 in the first Test at Headingley, making him only the fifth Indian to score a century on Test captaincy debut — alongside Hazare, Gavaskar, Vengsarkar, and Kohli.

With this, he became the fourth Indian captain to hit centuries in both the first two matches of a Test series, after Hazare, Gavaskar, and Azharuddin, only the second Indian to score tons in consecutive Tests in England after Azharuddin and the third Indian captain to record 50+ scores at Edgbaston, joining Kohli and MS Dhoni.
