London, July 16, 2025: Pakistan’s Olympic hero Arshad Nadeem has revealed that many of the rewards and promises made to him after his historic gold medal victory remain unfulfilled, casting a shadow over what should have been a celebrated chapter in the country’s sporting history.
Speaking during his recent visit to London, the javelin thrower expressed disappointment over the failure of both public and private sectors to honor the commitments made to him following his Olympic success—Pakistan’s first Olympic gold in over three decades.
“Many promises were made, from cash rewards to free residential plots,” Arshad said. “But most of them turned out to be nothing more than public gestures with no real follow-through. Only a few individuals actually delivered the rewards they promised.”
Arshad had been hailed as a national icon after his record-breaking javelin throw put Pakistan back on the global athletics map. In the aftermath of his win, numerous government officials, private sponsors, and housing societies publicly pledged millions in cash and real estate incentives as a token of national appreciation.
However, Arshad revealed that, beyond a few individual contributions, most of these commitments never materialized.
Currently undergoing treatment for a sports injury in the UK, Arshad was recently examined by Dr. Ali Bajwa in Cambridge, who noted that while the injury will take time to heal, a full recovery is expected. The setback has temporarily paused Arshad’s participation in competitive events, but doctors remain optimistic about his return.
Born on January 2, 1997, in Mian Channu, a small town in Pakistan’s Punjab province, Arshad’s early athletic interests included cricket, badminton, and football. His journey in javelin began under the guidance of Rasheed Ahmad Saqi, who recognized his potential and introduced him to the sport.
Starting with throws under 60 meters, Arshad made a breakthrough during WAPDA trials, where a 65-meter throw caught the attention of national coaches. Since then, his discipline, perseverance, and natural talent have propelled him to international glory.
Despite the challenges, Arshad remains hopeful and committed to representing Pakistan on the global stage. His story, while inspiring, now also highlights the need for greater accountability and institutional support for athletes who bring honor to the nation.
