Quetta, July 23, 2025: In a disturbing development, the mother of a woman murdered in an alleged ‘honour’ killing in Balochistan has publicly defended the act and appealed for the release of tribal leader Sardar Sher Baz Satakzai, who has been arrested in connection with the case.
A video statement circulating online shows the mother of the victim, identified as Bano, expressing support for the killing, which she claimed was carried out in accordance with Balochi tribal customs. She insisted that Sardar Sher Baz Satakzai had no role in the matter and should not be held responsible.
“My daughter was punished according to tribal traditions,” she said in the video. “I appeal to the authorities to release Sardar Sher Baz Satakzai and all others involved.”
The killing sparked national outrage after footage went viral showing armed men brutally murdering a man and a woman, allegedly during the Eid al-Adha holidays. The graphic video prompted swift condemnation and action from provincial and federal authorities.
At least 11 suspects, including the tribal chieftain Satakzai, have been arrested. Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti confirmed the arrests in a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), vowing that operations were continuing and the state would “stand with the oppressed.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident and directed provincial authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif spoke directly with CM Bugti, instructing him to ensure swift justice and complete accountability in the case.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the issue of honour killings in Pakistan, where tribal customs are sometimes used to justify acts of gender-based violence, despite being outlawed under national law.
