Islamabad, July 31, 2025: In an extraordinary display of global climate solidarity, Pakistan has joined hands with Ethiopia in planting 700 million seedlings in a single day as part of the “Renewal Through Planting” campaign under the Green Legacy Initiative launched by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
To mark the occasion, a joint plantation drive and media briefing were held at the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad. The event drew wide participation from the diplomatic community, government officials, parliamentarians, business leaders, religious figures, youth activists, media personnel, and civil society representatives.
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik was the chief guest at the event, while Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jemal Beker, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, elaborated on the significance of the Green Legacy Initiative, launched in 2019, as Ethiopia’s ambitious reforestation effort to restore ecosystems, combat carbon emissions and soil degradation, and ensure food security and sustainable development.
He emphasized that Pakistan’s active participation in the campaign symbolizes a growing partnership between the two countries and sends a strong message of shared responsibility in the fight against climate change.
Ambassador Beker also announced that a high-level Ethiopian delegation, including climate experts and senior officials, would soon visit Pakistan to express solidarity and participate in a series of “Green Dialogues” and plantation drives across the country.
In his address, Minister Musadik Malik praised the Ethiopian government and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed for their bold leadership on climate action. He lauded the Ambassador’s continuous efforts in promoting environmental values in Pakistan and recognized initiatives such as Green Legacy and Yelemat Tirufat (Bounty of Basket) as powerful models of resilience and innovation that Pakistan could learn from.
The event underscored the growing momentum behind international climate collaboration and reinforced the importance of community-driven, cross-border initiatives to tackle global environmental challenges.
