Lahore, August 4, 2025: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has requested the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to extend the deadline for confirming participation in the upcoming FIH Pro League, PHF President Tariq Bugti announced on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Lahore, Bugti said the federation has asked the FIH to move the confirmation deadline from August 12 to August 20, citing ongoing discussions with the government regarding participation.
“We are hopeful of sharing good news soon,” he added.
Bugti revealed that the PHF has submitted a Rs350 million budget proposal to the government specifically for the Pro League. A total of Rs700 million would be required to support the federation’s activities for the entire year, including international tournaments.
“Participation in the Pro League will provide our players with essential international exposure and contribute to improving Pakistan’s global hockey ranking,” he said.
“However, the final decision lies with the government.”
Bugti also addressed Pakistan’s potential participation in the upcoming Asia Cup in India, stating that security and diplomatic concerns remain under review.
“Given the current situation, we believe a delegation should visit India to assess ground realities before any final decision is made,” he noted, referencing security concerns and the reportedly hostile environment experienced during Pakistan’s recent cricket tour to England.
He said that PHF has formally shared its concerns with the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), particularly in light of threats reported by Indian media.
“Unlike cricket, hockey doesn’t operate on neutral venues, so we must take these concerns seriously,” Bugti emphasized.
Addressing reports of internal discord, Bugti dismissed speculation of divisions within the federation.
“We’ve been hearing such rumours since day one. The reality is that our teams continue to perform and reach the finals in international events.”
He confirmed that direct payments to players have begun, starting with local daily allowances.
“We’ve been transparent with players about our financial constraints, and they’ve shown understanding,” he said.
Meanwhile, several former Olympians have voiced support for Pakistan’s participation in the Pro League, describing it as crucial for the revival of hockey in the country.
