Pakistan, India set for high-stakes Asia Cup Super-Four clash in Dubai

Dubai, September 21, 2025: Arch-rivals Pakistan and India are set to lock horns once again today in the Asia Cup Super- Four round at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, just a week after their previous encounter at the same venue.

India had defeated Pakistan in last Sunday’s group-stage clash, which was followed by a week-long “handshake controversy.” Since then, Pakistan bounced back with a victory over hosts UAE to secure a spot in the Super Four, while India remained unbeaten after overcoming strong resistance from Oman in their final group match.

Pakistan enters the contest determined to settle scores with their traditional rivals. However, concerns persist over the team’s inconsistent batting lineup, particularly the form of opener Saim Ayub, who has been dismissed for a duck in all three matches so far. Skipper Salman Ali Agha will be banking on Saim and Sahibzada Farhan to provide a solid start, while Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Nawaz, and Mohammad Haris are expected to deliver crucial contributions with the bat.

On the bowling front, Haris Rauf, who returned in the last match in place of Sufiyan Muqeem, is likely to retain his place. Pakistan also possesses a left-arm swing option in Shaheen Afridi, which could trouble Indian batters, especially after Oman’s Shah Faisal dismissed Shubman Gill early with a similar angle.

For India, fitness concerns surround all-rounder Axar Patel, who sustained a head injury while fielding against Oman. If unavailable, India’s preferred three-spinner combination in Dubai may be disrupted. Despite using eight bowlers, India managed to claim only four Omani wickets, highlighting some vulnerabilities.

Both teams skipped pre-match press conferences, with Pakistan repeating the move it made before facing the UAE, while India was excused due to its tight schedule following the Oman match.

The Dubai surface is again expected to assist spinners. Historically, chasing sides have enjoyed more success at this venue, with 15 consecutive T20 internationals won by teams batting second at one point. In the last five matches here, chasing teams have won three. Toss, therefore, could prove decisive.

Meanwhile, demand for match tickets has surged, reflecting the anticipation for another high-voltage Pakistan-India showdown.
