Ahmedabad, October 2, 2025: Mohammed Siraj’s incisive four-wicket burst and KL Rahul’s unbeaten half-century handed India the early advantage on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday.

After bowling out the visitors for just 162 in 44.1 overs, India closed the day strongly at 121/2, trailing by only 41 runs with eight wickets intact.

Opting to bat first, West Indies captain Roston Chase saw his side falter against relentless Indian pace. Justin Greaves top-scored with 32 off 48 balls, while Shai Hope (26) and Chase (24) offered brief resistance before the innings folded quickly. Siraj was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 4/40 from 14 overs, ably backed by Jasprit Bumrah (3/38). Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar chipped in with a wicket each.

In reply, India’s openers provided a solid start, with Yashasvi Jaiswal striking 36 off 54 balls in a 68-run partnership with Rahul. Following Jaiswal’s dismissal, Sai Sudharsan (7) departed cheaply, but Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill steadied the innings with an unbroken 31-run stand. Rahul remained unbeaten on 53 from 114 deliveries, including six fours, while Gill was on 18 not out at stumps.

For West Indies, Chase and Jayden Seales picked up one wicket apiece, but India ended the day firmly in control.
