West Indies go all-spin to set unique ODI record

Mirpur, October 21, 2025: The West Indies made history on Tuesday by becoming the first-ever team in men’s One-Day Internationals (ODIs) to bowl all 50 overs using spin during the second match of their three-game series against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 in the series after a 74-run defeat in the opener, the visitors adopted a radical all-spin strategy to exploit the turning conditions in Mirpur. The spin quintet of Gudakesh Motie, Akeal Hosein, Roston Chase, Khary Pierre, and Alick Athanaze shared the bowling duties, sending down the entire quota of overs without a single delivery of pace.

Previously, the record for the most overs bowled by spinners in a men’s ODI innings was 44, achieved thrice by Sri Lanka — against West Indies (1996), New Zealand (1998), and Australia (2004).

The bold approach paid dividends as the West Indies restricted Bangladesh to 213 for 7 in 50 overs, despite a gritty knock from opener Soumya Sarkar.

Alick Athanaze was the standout performer, returning exceptional figures of 2 for 14 in 10 overs, while Gudakesh Motie led the wicket tally with three scalps for 65. Akeal Hosein chipped in with 2 for 41, whereas Chase and Pierre remained wicketless but maintained control in the middle overs.

When this report was filed, the West Indies were 53 for 2 in 14 overs while chasing 214, with Keacy Carty unbeaten on 23 and Ackeem Auguste on 1.

The visitors had an early setback when Brandon King was dismissed for a duck off the third delivery of the innings. However, Carty and Athanaze steadied the chase with a 51-run partnership for the second wicket, before Athanaze fell to Rishad Hossain in the 14th over.
