Peshawar, November 2, 2025: A powerful explosion inside the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) police station in Peshawar on Sunday claimed the life of one policeman and left two others injured, officials confirmed.

The blast caused extensive damage to a section of the building, sending shockwaves through nearby areas and sparking panic among officers stationed in the vicinity. Rescue teams and police units swiftly reached the site, shifting the injured to a hospital and cordoning off the area for investigation.

According to Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Dr. Saeed, the explosion was caused by a short circuit in explosives stored within the facility, dismissing rumours of a terrorist attack. “No external assault occurred. The incident appears accidental, but a detailed technical investigation is under way,” he said.

At the time of the explosion, three CTD personnel were present; one embraced martyrdom while two sustained injuries. Four detainees housed in the station’s lock-up were safely moved to another secure location following the blast.

A special investigation team from the CTD, along with the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), examined the site, collected forensic samples, and recovered remnants of explosive materials from the debris. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed to establish the exact sequence of events.

Investigators are also analyzing the building’s electrical systems to confirm whether an electrical malfunction directly triggered the blast or if other technical faults played a role. Police have begun recording statements from officers who were inside the station at the time to reconstruct the moments before and after the explosion.

Authorities have pledged to implement stricter safety protocols for handling and storing explosives at CTD facilities across the province. The tragic incident has once again underscored the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in the line of duty.
