Islamabad, November 10, 2025: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro on Monday announced his resignation from the Senate shortly after casting his vote in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, saying his decision was made “exclusively for Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the Pakistan Army.”

“If anyone is mistaken, let me say that I came here to vote for Asim Munir, not for anyone else,” Abro declared on the Senate floor during Monday’s session.

The Upper House passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which seeks to reform the country’s military and judicial structures, amid a walkout and protest by the opposition benches. The bill secured the required two-thirds majority with 64 votes in favour.

Alongside members of the ruling coalition, Awami National Party (ANP) Senator Aimal Wali Khan, JUI-F’s Ahmed Khan, and PTI-backed Abro also supported the legislation.

In his address, Abro lauded the armed forces for what he called a “humiliating defeat” inflicted on India in the May conflict, claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump had personally acknowledged Field Marshal Asim Munir’s leadership.

“The level of respect shown to Field Marshal Asim Munir by the U.S. was unprecedented — greater than what any prime minister ever received,” he said.

Abro later announced his resignation, citing a likely disqualification for violating party policy by supporting the amendment. He also criticised his party for failing to stand by him during personal hardships.

“During the 26th Constitutional Amendment period, 10 members of my family — including my wife — were arrested. My party offered no support,” he said.

The senator’s resignation marked a rare public break from the PTI’s stance, as the party and opposition alliance had boycotted the session, terming the 27th Amendment “unconstitutional and politically motivated.”
