Islamabad, December 28, 2025: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday announced that Islamabad will be transformed into Pakistan’s first “Capital Smart City,” unveiling a major step toward technology-driven governance and public safety. He also declared that from January 1, 2026, the entry of vehicles without M-Tags into the federal capital will be prohibited.

The announcement was made during the Interior Minister’s visit to the Safe City Headquarters, accompanied by Minister of State Talal Chaudhry. During the visit, Mohsin Naqvi reviewed the city’s monitoring system displayed on the digital wall and assessed public safety measures being implemented through modern technology.

The Interior Minister also inspected security surveillance arrangements at the Special Chinese Desk in the control room. An important meeting was held at the Safe City Headquarters under his chairmanship, where measures for the protection of citizens’ lives and property were reviewed.

Mohsin Naqvi directed the relevant authorities to submit a comprehensive plan for upgrading Islamabad Safe City into Capital Smart City and instructed that work on the project be expedited. He said that under the Capital Smart City initiative, key citizen services—including Rescue 1122, traffic management, security services, and the Capital Development Authority (CDA)—would be integrated into a centralized and coordinated system.

He further stated that the scope of the Capital Smart City project would eventually be expanded across the country, with Islamabad serving as a model to make cities safer through effective use of technology. Emphasizing the urgency of reforms, the interior minister said modernization of Safe City operations and optimal utilization of technological resources were the need of the hour.

During the meeting, the Inspector General of Islamabad Police gave a detailed briefing on the transition from Safe City to Capital Smart City. Officials informed the minister that the use of Safe City cameras during Muharram-ul-Haram had resulted in significant savings of time and resources, while enhancing security and operational efficiency.

The Federal Secretary Interior, Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Additional Deputy Commissioner General, and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
