First full court meeting of the Supreme Court chaired by Justice Yahya Afridi.

Islamabad, October 28, 2024- The Supreme Court of Pakistan held a full court meeting under the leadership of newly appointed Chief Justice Yahya Afridi on Monday. The session focused on evaluating the Court’s performance, particularly regarding the backlog of cases, and exploring strategies to enhance judicial efficiency. Notably, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for Umrah, participated in the meeting via video link

According to the press release issued by the Supreme 6During the meeting, the Supreme Court registrar provided an overview of the current caseload, highlighting that approximately 59,191 cases are pending before the Court. In response, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah proposed a structured plan aimed at expediting case disposals, suggesting a phased approach over one, three, and six months. The proposal also included the establishment of special benches comprising two and three judges to specifically address criminal and civil cases, respectively. The full court approved this plan, emphasizing its potential to significantly improve judicial efficiency

The implementation of these measures is set to begin immediately, with progress to be reviewed in the next full court meeting scheduled for December 2, 2024.
