Islamabad, February 2, 2026: The Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges met under the chairmanship of Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi to consider amendments to Rule 209 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 2012, review the implementation status of its recommendations regarding the quashing of FIRs against Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) students, examine the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) assurance in a missing file case, and deliberate on a privilege motion concerning the alleged misconduct of Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan.
The meeting was attended by Senator Hafiz Abdul Karim, Senator Dost Ali Jeesar, Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, and Senator Saadia Abbasi, while Senator Shahadat Awan participated as the mover of the privilege motion.
The committee thoroughly deliberated on the proposed amendment to Rule 209 and, following a no-objection conveyed by the relevant ministry, unanimously approved the amendment.
Members also received a briefing on earlier directions for the withdrawal of FIRs lodged against students of Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. The Vice Chancellor informed the committee that an application for the withdrawal of the FIRs had been submitted before the relevant forums and would be processed shortly. He assured the panel of the university administration’s commitment to student welfare while maintaining discipline and a peaceful, education-friendly environment. After detailed deliberations, the chairman disposed of the matter with directions to the SP City, Islamabad, to ensure the FIRs are quashed through the appropriate legal forum.
The committee further reviewed the missing file case related to House No. 622, I-10/4, in light of a report by the Senate Functional Committee on Government Assurances. Members were informed that the matter is sub judice; consequently, the chairman deferred the agenda.
The committee also expressed displeasure over the absence of Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, against whom a privilege motion has been moved. On the suggestion of the motion’s mover, Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, and due to the minister’s absence, the chairman deferred the agenda.
