Colombo, February 5, 2026: Pakistan Cricket Team captain Salman Ali Agha said the team will consult the government if they reach the knockout stages of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and face arch-rivals India.
“The India game is not in our control. It was the government’s decision, and if we have to play them in the semi-final or final, we will go back to them and act on their advice,” Agha told reporters at a captain’s press conference in Colombo on Thursday.
The tournament has been surrounded by political controversy after Bangladesh was removed and Pakistan refused to play India in their Group A match. Despite this, a semi-final or final clash between the two rivals remains possible.
Agha emphasized that the team is focusing on playing positive cricket throughout the tournament rather than factors beyond its control. He expressed disappointment over Bangladesh’s absence, saying, “It is unfortunate that the Bangladesh team is not playing in the World Cup. They have a very good side. Hopefully they will support us.”
Leading Pakistan in his first World Cup as captain, Agha expressed confidence in the team’s momentum, noting that Pakistan has not lost a series since the Asia Cup last year. “We’ve been playing really good cricket. Everything is coming along nicely, and we’re confident of doing well,” he added.
He stressed that no team should be underestimated in a World Cup and highlighted Pakistan’s preparations for their opening match against the Netherlands on February 7 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. Pakistan’s group-stage fixtures also include matches against the United States on February 10 and Namibia on February 18. The team had originally been scheduled to face India at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 15.
Agha also praised Sri Lanka for its hospitality, calling it his “second home” and appreciating the warmth of its people.
