Imagine… standing in Chicago’s Millennium Park, where the iconic Cloud Gate (The Bean) mirrors the city’s soaring skyline and endless sky in its gleaming surface. The glass facades of the Hub Tower shimmer with lights, while the Magnificent Mile dazzles with shopping, world-class restaurants, and magical nighttime illuminations. At Navy Pier, the blue waves of Lake Michigan lap gently, the Chicago Riverwalk invites leisurely strolls, and Architecture Boat Tours reveal captivating stories of the city’s historic and modern masterpieces.

Chicago’s art and culture scene is unparalleled: The Art Institute of Chicago ranks among the world’s finest museums, housing masterpieces by Van Gogh, Monet, and more. Second City comedy theater launched legends like Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert. Grant Park hosts massive music festivals like Lollapalooza, and Wrigley Field carries the historic legacy of the Chicago Cubs baseball tradition.

Illinois offers diverse natural beauty beyond the city: Hiking through the forests and lakes of Galena, exploring mountain trails, waterfalls, and caves in Shawnee National Forest, marveling at the dramatic rock formations of Starved Rock State Park, wandering the endless prairies that earned the state its “Prairie State” nickname, and enjoying serene lakes near the metropolitan area. Southern Illinois shines with the stunning natural rock formations of Garden of the Gods, while Morton Arboretum and Chicago Botanic Garden feature over 24 themed gardens. Brookfield Zoo brings wildlife up close, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie-style homes in Oak Park delight architecture lovers. These attractions make Illinois the true “Middle of Everything”—where urban excitement meets rural tranquility.

Illinois ranks as America’s sixth most populous state. As of July 2025, the population stands at approximately 12.72 million (U.S. Census Vintage 2025 estimate: 12,719,141), marking the third consecutive year of growth (an increase of 16,108 residents from 2024 to 2025, and over 100,000 since 2022). Gross State Product (GSP) exceeds $1 trillion (latest BEA data).

The economy is diverse, powerful, and forward-looking:

  • Finance and Business – Chicago Board of Trade and Mercantile Exchange rank among the world’s leading financial centers.
  • Technology and Innovation – A surging tech hub in fintech, quantum computing, biotech, and software. Companies like tastytrade, Mastercard, Capital One, and startups such as Zero Hash, Kin Insurance, and Portal Innovations thrive here. The Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park (IQMP) anchors quantum advancements with tenants like PsiQuantum, IBM, Diraq, Infleqtion, and Pasqal. The Chicago Quantum Exchange drives research, while accelerators and universities fuel deep tech growth. In 2026, Chicago ranks high in global startup ecosystems and leads in quantum commercialization.
  • Manufacturing – Machinery, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and transportation equipment.
  • Agriculture – Top U.S. producer of corn, soybeans, and hogs.
  • Tourism – Record-breaking in 2024 with 112.9–113 million visitors, $48.5 billion in visitor spending, total economic impact of $85.1 billion, supporting 454,455 jobs, and generating $6.8 billion in state and local tax revenue (with continued momentum into 2025–2026).
  • Transportation – Chicago remains America’s largest rail, air, and logistics hub.
  • Education and Healthcare – World-class institutions and research centers.
  • Median Household Income is approximately $83,390 (2020–2024 latest), with recent figures around $84,210 (2024 data).

Historical highlights: French exploration, statehood after the American Revolution, Abraham Lincoln’s home and political career in Springfield, 19th-century industrial boom, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, World’s Fairs in 1893 and 1933, and today’s role as a center for tech, finance, and culture.

Education at a global level: University of Chicago (a Nobel Prize powerhouse), Northwestern University, University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Loyola, DePaul—leading in research, engineering, medicine, and business.

Tourism continues to break records, driven by Chicago’s museums, parks, festivals, historic sites, natural beauty, and emerging tech attractions.

Diversity defines Illinois: White majority, large Black community (especially South Side Chicago), Hispanic, Asian populations. The Pakistani community in Chicago and suburbs numbers 30,000–49,000 (latest estimates), centered around Devon Avenue (“Little India/Pakistan”)—with halal restaurants, grocery stores, mosques (like Masjid Al-Furqan), Eid celebrations, and active businesses in retail, tech, medical, and transportation.

Sports passion runs deep: Chicago Bulls (NBA, Michael Jordan’s legacy), Chicago Bears (NFL), Chicago Cubs and White Sox (MLB), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), Chicago Fire (MLS)—Illinois is a historic hub of athletic tradition and excitement.

In previous columns, we explored New York’s Empire spirit, California’s Golden spirit, Florida’s Sun spirit, Texas’s Lone Star spirit, and Pennsylvania’s Keystone spirit—today, feel Illinois’s Prairie spirit, embodied by hardworking people, relentless innovation, rich diversity, booming technology, endless recreation, and the true essence of the American Dream.

If you haven’t visited yet, go now—experience Chicago’s sparkle, The Bean’s reflections, Lake Michigan’s waves, the vast prairies, Shawnee’s forests, the rising world of tech, and feel the heartbeat of a state that connects America.

Salute to Illinois—for its Prairie spirit, magnificent cities, agricultural and financial strength, top-tier education, technological breakthroughs, record-shattering tourism, and diverse communities that make it the genuine heart of America.

Once you fall in love, the Prairie State will live in your heart forever—and you’ll say: “I’ve been to Illinois… and it breathes within me.”
