Pallekele, February 16, 2026: Co-hosts Sri Lanka produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Australia by eight wickets and secure qualification for the Super Eights stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Monday.
The emphatic victory—Sri Lanka’s third in as many matches—propelled them into the next round in commanding fashion. Chasing a challenging target of 182, the hosts reached the total with 12 balls to spare, losing just two wickets, courtesy of a match-winning 97-run partnership for the second wicket.
Sri Lanka’s chase began on a shaky note when left-handed opener Kusal Perera was dismissed for one in the second over by Marcus Stoinis, leaving the home side at eight for one. However, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis staged a superb recovery, combining aggression with composure to put Australia under sustained pressure.
The pair added 97 runs at a brisk pace before Stoinis broke the stand in the 13th over, dismissing Mendis, who struck an important 51 off 38 deliveries, including six sixes and a four. Nissanka, though, continued the onslaught and guided Sri Lanka home in the 18th over with a magnificent unbeaten century. He scored 100 off 52 balls, laced with 10 fours and five sixes, to cap a memorable run chase.
Nissanka was well supported by middle-order batter Pavan Rathnayake, who remained not out on 28 from just 15 balls, hammering six fours. Stoinis finished as Australia’s lone wicket-taker, returning figures of 2/46 from his four overs.
Earlier, Australia posted a competitive 181 all out in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Openers Travis Head and captain Mitchell Marsh gave the visitors a flying start, adding 104 runs inside the first nine overs with both scoring half-centuries. However, Sri Lanka’s bowlers pulled things back in the middle overs, and Australia’s middle order failed to capitalise on the strong platform.
Head top-scored with a rapid 29-ball 56, while Marsh contributed 54 off 27 deliveries. Josh Inglis (27) and Glenn Maxwell (22) were the only other batters to reach double figures.
For Sri Lanka, Dushan Hemantha led the bowling attack with impressive figures of 3/37. Dushmantha Chameera claimed two wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis chipped in with one wicket apiece.
With momentum firmly on their side, Sri Lanka now head into the Super Eights brimming with confidence after comprehensively outplaying one of the tournament favourites.
