Islamabad, April 9, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a warm and cordial telephone call from Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, today to discuss recent developments in the Middle East.
During the conversation, Chancellor Merz commended Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts that led to the recent U.S.-Iran ceasefire and the initiation of negotiations scheduled to be held in Islamabad this week. Prime Minister Sharif thanked the Chancellor for Germany’s endorsement of Pakistan’s sincere mediation and stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire to ensure the negotiations produce successful outcomes.
Both leaders also expressed concern over the continuing hostilities in Lebanon and expressed hope that sustained diplomatic efforts would bring lasting peace to the region.
The discussion reaffirmed strong Pakistan-Germany relations and highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to regional stability and constructive dialogue.
