Islamabad, May 1, 2026: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday paid tribute to workers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting labour rights, improving working conditions and ensuring dignity for workers across the country as Pakistan observed International Labour Day.
Observed annually on May 1, Labour Day — also known as May Day — is commemorated worldwide to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of workers and to promote fair wages, safe working conditions and protection against exploitation.
In his message marking the occasion, President Zardari said the day serves as a reminder of the historic struggle of workers who sacrificed their lives for fundamental rights, including fair wages and reasonable working hours, laying the foundation for modern labour protections.
Recalling the historic Chicago labour movement nearly 140 years ago, he noted that workers had demanded “eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for personal life,” describing it as a defining principle of human dignity.
The president said the Constitution of 1973 guarantees protection against exploitation and obligates the state to eliminate all forms of exploitation while promoting equitable economic principles.
He praised Pakistan’s labour force, saying workers from agriculture, industry and other sectors continue to play a crucial role in national development through their dedication and resilience.
President Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to international labour standards, including fair wages, social protection, elimination of forced and child labour and non-discrimination, as well as compliance with conventions of the International Labour Organization.
Highlighting the contribution of overseas Pakistanis, he said millions of workers abroad support the national economy through remittances while representing Pakistan’s professionalism and values across the world.
He stressed that ensuring safe working conditions, equal opportunities and adequate wages remains a national priority, adding that the government would continue efforts to strengthen labour protections and expand employment opportunities.
The president also emphasised investment in human capital through technical and vocational education, greater participation of women in the workforce and job creation for youth.
Calling for collective efforts, he urged workers, employers, trade unions, governments and international partners to work together for an economy based on fairness, dignity and equal opportunity.
“A nation that protects its workers, protects its future,” he said, adding that labour empowerment is essential for sustainable national progress.
In a separate message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan joins the international community in observing Labour Day with renewed resolve and appreciation for workers across all sectors.
He described labourers, farmers, artisans, factory workers and professionals as the backbone of society whose efforts keep the country’s economic and social systems running.
The prime minister said the hard work of Pakistan’s workforce — from fields and factories to construction sites and global markets — reflects the country’s resilience and industrious spirit.
He also lauded overseas Pakistanis, saying millions working abroad act as ambassadors of Pakistan and contribute significantly to the economy through remittances.
Highlighting government initiatives, the prime minister said targeted programmes under the National Skills Development Policy are being implemented to equip workers with modern skills aligned with evolving global market demands.
He said the government is focusing on internationally recognised training, language proficiency and professional certification to improve employment opportunities for Pakistanis overseas.
Prime Minister Shehbaz also noted that institutions such as the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) and the Workers Welfare Fund are continuing efforts to provide pensions, housing, education and other essential services to workers and their families.
He urged federal and provincial governments, industrialists and the business community to uphold workers’ dignity and rights, stressing that fair treatment and improved working conditions are a shared responsibility.
“Let us renew our commitment to honour and protect those who drive our progress,” the prime minister said, expressing confidence that Pakistan’s workforce would continue to excel globally through dedication, skill and integrity.
