Sylhet, May 20, 2026: Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 78 runs in the second and final Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday to complete a historic 2-0 series whitewash — their first-ever home Test series sweep over Pakistan.
Chasing a daunting target of 437, Pakistan were bowled out for 358 in 97.2 overs as spinner Taijul Islam produced a match-winning bowling display.
Resuming their innings on the fifth day, Mohammad Rizwan and Sajid Khan added valuable runs after a brief rain interruption, putting together a 54-run partnership and taking Pakistan beyond the 350-run mark.
The stand was eventually broken when Taijul Islam dismissed Sajid Khan for 28 off 36 balls, an innings featuring five boundaries.
In the following over, fast bowler Shoriful Islam removed Mohammad Rizwan after a fighting knock of 94 from 166 deliveries, including 10 fours, leaving Pakistan on the brink of defeat.
Taijul then wrapped up the innings by dismissing Khurram Shahzad for a duck, finishing with impressive figures of 6 for 120 in 34.2 overs.
Nahid Rana claimed two wickets, while Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up one wicket each.
Pakistan had started day four cautiously through Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal before Nahid Rana dismissed Fazal for six. Mehidy Hasan Miraz then removed Azan for 21 as Pakistan slipped to 41-2.
Babar Azam and Shan Masood rebuilt the innings with a solid partnership that guided Pakistan past the 100-run mark.
However, Bangladesh struck back strongly in the second session as Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam removed Babar, Saud Shakeel and Shan Masood in quick succession.
Babar scored 47 off 52 deliveries, while Saud Shakeel managed only six. Shan Masood top-scored with a composed 71 from 116 balls before falling to Taijul Islam.
Pakistan later found resistance through Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha, who shared a crucial 134-run sixth-wicket partnership to revive the chase.
Rizwan registered his 14th Test half-century, while Salman Ali Agha scored 71 off 102 balls, including six fours and a six, before Taijul Islam broke the stand.
Pakistan’s collapse continued when Hasan Ali was dismissed for a duck, giving Taijul his fourth wicket of the innings.
Earlier in the match, Bangladesh were bowled out for 278 in their first innings despite being reduced to 116-6, thanks largely to a brilliant century from Litton Das, who scored 126 off 159 balls with 16 fours and two sixes.
Khurram Shahzad led Pakistan’s bowling effort with figures of 4 for 81, while Mohammad Abbas claimed three wickets.
Pakistan were then dismissed for 232 in their first innings, conceding a 46-run deficit. Babar Azam top-scored with 68, while Sajid Khan added 38.
Bangladesh strengthened their grip on the match in the second innings by scoring 390 runs, setting Pakistan a challenging target of 437.
Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim starred with a superb 137, while Litton Das and Mahmudul Hasan Joy also made important contributions.
Khurram Shahzad again impressed with four wickets, while Sajid Khan took three wickets and Hasan Ali and Mohammad Abbas shared the remaining dismissals.
