Rawalpindi, May 30, 2026: Pakistan reached a historic milestone in international cricket on Saturday, becoming only the third team in men’s ODI history to play 1,000 One-Day Internationals, as they took the field against Australia in the opening match of the three-match series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The achievement places Pakistan alongside cricketing giants Australia and India in an exclusive club of teams to have reached the four-figure mark in ODI appearances.

Pakistan made their ODI debut against New Zealand in Christchurch in 1973 and entered Saturday’s match with a record of 527 victories and 442 defeats from 999 matches. Nine matches ended in ties, while 21 produced no result.

Over the past five decades, Pakistan have produced numerous memorable moments in the 50-over format, most notably winning the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 1992 under the leadership of Imran Khan and lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 under captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.

India currently hold the record for the highest number of ODI appearances, having played 1,075 matches, while Australia are second on the list with 1,019 games.

Ahead of the landmark fixture, Australia captain Josh Inglis presented Pakistan skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi with a special commemorative souvenir to mark the occasion.

The memento featured a cricket bat topped with a bail and three cricket balls arranged to form the number “1000”, symbolising Pakistan’s entry into an elite group of ODI-playing nations.

Speaking at the toss, Shaheen described the occasion as a proud moment for Pakistan cricket and expressed hope that the team would celebrate the milestone with a strong performance.

“It is a special occasion for Pakistan. It’s a happy thing that when Pakistanis represent in ODI cricket, it is a big achievement. So I think it is a special moment for the whole team and we will enjoy it and push for it,” he said.

The milestone underscores Pakistan’s rich legacy in ODI cricket and highlights the country’s enduring presence in the international game since becoming one of the pioneers of the format more than five decades ago.
