Islamabad, June 9, 2026: Portugal and Pakistan continue to enjoy friendly and constructive relations, with bilateral cooperation expanding across political, economic, educational, and cultural spheres, Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan Paulo Guedes Domingues said on the occasion of Portugal’s National Day.

In a message marking the Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities, the ambassador highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries and reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to further strengthening ties with Pakistan.

“Although separated by geography, our two nations share a rich history of contacts and exchanges, as well as a common commitment to dialogue, international cooperation and mutual respect,” Ambassador Domingues said.

The Portuguese envoy noted that Portugal Day celebrates the country’s history, culture, language, and values, while also paying tribute to renowned poet Luís de Camões, whose literary legacy continues to symbolize Portugal’s spirit of openness, exploration, and intercultural dialogue.

He also praised Portuguese communities living abroad, describing them as important ambassadors of Portugal who contribute to strengthening the country’s global presence and fostering connections between nations.

Highlighting the human dimension of Portugal-Pakistan relations, Ambassador Domingues said an increasing number of Portuguese citizens have Pakistani roots and are making valuable contributions to Portuguese society in various sectors.

“Their presence reflects the close links that unite our countries and serves as a living bridge between Portugal and Pakistan, strengthening mutual understanding and friendship,” he said.

The ambassador noted that bilateral relations have witnessed positive growth in recent years, particularly in political engagement, trade and investment, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. He described the current phase of relations as particularly encouraging, marked by regular contacts and a shared desire to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

“We remain committed to further strengthening this partnership and exploring new avenues of cooperation that can benefit both our countries and peoples,” he added.

Ambassador Domingues also acknowledged the efforts of the Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad and praised the role of Portugal’s Honorary Consuls in Karachi and Lahore, Fakir S. Ayazuddin and Iftikhar Firoz, for their contributions to enhancing relations with Pakistani institutions, businesses, and citizens.

Expressing gratitude to the Pakistani government, diplomatic corps, business community, academia, media representatives, and friends of Portugal, the ambassador said their support reflected the strong friendship between the two countries and a shared confidence in an even stronger partnership in the future.

Concluding his message, Ambassador Domingues emphasized that the relationship between Portugal and Pakistan is built on the shared values of respect, dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding.

“As we celebrate Portugal today, we also celebrate the friendship between Portugal and Pakistan and the values that bring us together,” he said, adding, “Long live Portugal, and long live the friendship between Portugal and Pakistan.”
