Brisbane, November 14, 2024 – Australia claimed a 29-run victory over Pakistan in the rain-affected opening match of the three-game T20I series at the Gabba on Thursday. The game, shortened to seven overs per side due to rain delays, saw Australia post 93-4 in 42 balls before restricting Pakistan to 63-9 in their allotted overs.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to field first. Despite early breakthroughs by Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, who removed Australia’s openers cheaply, Glenn Maxwell counter-attacked with a quick-fire 43 off just 19 balls, including five fours and three sixes. Marcus Stoinis added an unbeaten 21 off seven balls, hitting two fours and a six, helping Australia reach a competitive total. Mohammad Abbas Afridi took two wickets in his only over.

Chasing 94, Pakistan found themselves in trouble early, slumping to 24-6 within 3.2 overs. Mohammad Abbas Afridi top-scored with an unbeaten 20 off 10 balls, striking two fours and a six. Haseebullah (12 off 8 balls) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (11 off 6 balls) were the only other players to reach double figures.

Xavier Bartlett and Nathan Ellis led the Australian bowling attack, claiming three wickets each, while Adam Zampa impressed with 2-9. The teams will head to Sydney for the second T20I on Saturday.
