London, July 3, 2026: England have named a 16-player squad for the upcoming three-match One-Day International series against India, handing maiden call-ups to uncapped duo James Coles and Josh Tongue as the hosts continue to reshape their 50-over side ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The squad also marks the return of fast bowlers Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood, while all-rounder Jacob Bethell is expected to open the batting alongside Ben Duckett in a move that could influence England’s long-term plans across formats.
Bethell, who has recently batted at No. 4 in ODI cricket, has prior experience opening for England Under-19s and the England Lions. His promotion comes as England continue to search for a settled opening combination following Phil Salt’s omission after the ICC Champions Trophy.
Since the start of last year, Duckett has had four different opening partners in ODI cricket, with Jamie Smith, Zak Crawley and Rehan Ahmed among those tried at the top of the order. None, however, has managed to cement the role on a permanent basis.
England’s reshaped batting line-up is expected to feature Joe Root at No. 3, followed by captain Harry Brook and wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler in the middle order.
Will Jacks is likely to retain his place in the middle order after impressing during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, while the team management will still have to decide whether to bolster the batting with Tom Banton or opt for an additional bowling option in the final XI.
Fast bowler Jofra Archer returns to England’s ODI set-up after being rested for the series in Sri Lanka earlier this year.
The recalls of Atkinson and Mahmood, combined with Tongue’s inclusion, give England a pace attack that closely resembles the one used in their recent Test series against New Zealand.
Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton were unavailable for selection due to hand and quad injuries respectively. Carse has, however, resumed training with the squad.
Spinner Liam Dawson has also been included as England continue to assess their spin and all-round options ahead of the next 50-over World Cup.
One of the notable inclusions is James Coles, a left-arm spinning all-rounder who offers England another versatile option in both departments. If selected, Coles could make his international debut during the India series.
India, meanwhile, have named a full-strength squad for the ODI leg of the tour, with Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli all included, although Kohli’s participation remains subject to fitness.
The three-match ODI series will begin at Edgbaston on July 14, before moving to Cardiff on July 16 and concluding at Lord’s on July 19.
