ICC confirms 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier window as host nation awaits decision

Dubai, August 5, 2026: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier will be held from February 22 to March 23, 2027, although the host nation for the 10-team tournament has yet to be finalised.

The Qualifier forms a key part of the ICC’s revamped qualification pathway for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, following the new qualification structure announced in July.

Under the revised format, the winner of the 10-team Qualifier will secure direct qualification for the 14-team World Cup. The teams finishing second, third and fourth will advance to the newly introduced Super Series, the opening stage of the World Cup, where the winner will claim the final place in the tournament’s 12-team main stage.

The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 4 to November 21, 2027, with matches to be played at 12 venues.

Qualification for the tournament will be determined through a multi-tier system. The World Cup Qualifier will feature the two lowest-ranked ICC Full Members in the ODI rankings—excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe—as of September 30, 2026. They will be joined by the top four teams from Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top four sides emerging from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

The Qualifier Playoff will comprise the bottom four teams from League 2 and the top four teams from the Challenge League, cricket’s third-tier international competition. Although the ICC has yet to announce the exact tournament format, the top four teams from the eight-team Playoff will progress to the World Cup Qualifier.

Meanwhile, the Challenge League will feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each group will contest three round-robin tournaments during the qualification cycle, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Qualifier Playoff.

The qualification race remains particularly significant for the West Indies, who currently occupy 10th place in the ICC ODI rankings and face the prospect of another appearance in the qualifying tournament.

The Caribbean side have just two ODI matches remaining before the September 30 rankings cut-off, both against India in September. Victories in both matches could improve their chances of climbing into the automatic qualification positions, but their fate will also depend on the outcome of the upcoming ODI series between eighth-ranked Afghanistan and 12th-ranked Ireland.

If Ireland defeat Afghanistan by a margin of 4-1 or 5-0 and the West Indies win both matches against India, the two-time world champions could move into the top eight. However, an Afghanistan series victory would leave the West Indies almost certain to enter the World Cup Qualifier.

The Caribbean side endured a similar setback ahead of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, when they failed to qualify for the tournament after suffering a dramatic Super Over defeat to the Netherlands during the Qualifier in Harare.
