Islamabad, August 19, 2026: Pakistan and Ethiopia have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agriculture to expand trade and investment, facilitate technology transfer, enhance food security and promote livestock development.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba and Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain at the Ministry of National Food Security and Research in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The two sides discussed a range of opportunities to expand agricultural collaboration, including the possibility of developing an agro-pact to institutionalize cooperation and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise and technology between agricultural institutions in the two countries.
Ambassador Oumer highlighted the significant potential for agricultural cooperation between Ethiopia and Pakistan, noting the importance of agriculture to Ethiopia’s economy and the priority accorded to the sector by the Ethiopian government.
He also briefed the minister on Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, describing it as a comprehensive programme aimed at promoting sustainable development through agricultural growth, food security, climate resilience and the development of a green economy.
The ambassador said Ethiopia was ready to share its experience and expertise gained through the Green Legacy Initiative with Pakistan. He also invited Pakistani agricultural entrepreneurs and investors to explore opportunities in Ethiopia’s agriculture sector.
During the meeting, Ambassador Oumer also briefed the federal minister on Ethiopia’s preparations to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in Addis Ababa in 2027.
Rana Tanveer highlighted Pakistan’s expertise in agricultural research, modern farming technologies, agricultural machinery, irrigation, livestock development and agro-processing. He expressed Pakistan’s readiness to share its technical expertise and experience with Ethiopia.
The minister said the two countries had considerable scope to expand cooperation in crop productivity, seed development, climate-resilient agriculture and agricultural mechanization.
The discussions reflected a shared interest in using agricultural cooperation to strengthen Pakistan-Ethiopia economic ties while contributing to food security, sustainable development, investment and technology-driven growth in both countries.
