Islamabad, August 19, 2026: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday received United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya for a farewell call, appreciating his contribution to strengthening Pakistan-UN cooperation during his tenure.
The prime minister thanked Yahya for his services and acknowledged the continued support extended by the UN Country Team to Pakistan’s development and humanitarian priorities, particularly in climate resilience, sustainable development and disaster response.
Shehbaz also recalled the UN’s role in mobilising international support for Pakistan, particularly following the devastating floods of 2022.
The prime minister congratulated Yahya on his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
He described the appointment as a recognition of Yahya’s experience and commitment and wished him success in his new assignment. Shehbaz expressed confidence that Pakistan’s close partnership with the United Nations would continue to grow.
Yahya thanked the prime minister and the Government of Pakistan for the cooperation extended to him and the UN Country Team during his tenure. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development and humanitarian priorities.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and other senior government officials were also present at the meeting.
