US pauses visa appointments worldwide amid Trump administration immigration crackdown

Washington, August 26, 2026: The administration of US President Donald Trump has temporarily paused visa appointments at US embassies and consulates worldwide as part of a global training programme for consular officers, adding to uncertainty for applicants amid the administration’s broader immigration crackdown.

A US State Department spokesperson said on Tuesday that the department had launched a global training initiative across US diplomatic missions and that visa appointment schedules would be adjusted to accommodate the training.

The department did not provide a specific timeline for the pause or say how long the training would continue. It said the initiative was intended to help consular officers identify applicants considered likely to become dependent on US public benefits and ensure that visa applications are evaluated “comprehensively and consistently”.

The suspension was first reported by the Financial Times, which said immigrant visa applicants with scheduled interviews at US embassies and consulates had received emails informing them that their appointments were being rescheduled. Applicants were told they would be notified of new interview dates at a later stage.

The development comes as the Trump administration pursues an aggressive immigration enforcement campaign during the president’s second term, including expanded deportations and increased scrutiny of visa and green card holders and applicants.

The administration has also taken steps affecting legal immigration, including the introduction of new fees for certain employment-based visa applicants and measures that have made several immigration processes more restrictive.

Trump has defended the immigration crackdown as necessary to strengthen domestic security and prevent abuse of the US immigration system. His administration has also sought to revoke visas and green cards and reject applications on a range of grounds, including applicants’ political activities and participation in pro-Palestinian protests.

The administration’s immigration measures have faced growing legal challenges.

A US federal judge on Friday struck down an administration policy that had suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries, ruling that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had exceeded his statutory authority in imposing the measure.

The ruling represented another legal setback for the administration as it attempts to expand restrictions on immigration and visa issuance.

Rights groups have broadly criticised the crackdown, accusing the administration of adopting discriminatory policies and undermining protections for free speech and due process.

Civil liberties organisations have also warned that heightened immigration enforcement could create an increasingly hostile environment for ethnic minorities and contribute to concerns over racial profiling.

The administration says its policies are focused on ensuring that people entering the United States comply with immigration laws and do not become a burden on public resources.

The latest worldwide adjustment to visa appointments, however, is expected to affect applicants across a broad range of nationalities and visa categories as US consular posts implement the new training programme.

The State Department has yet to announce when regular visa appointment scheduling will fully resume.
