Islamabad, September 21, 2026: The High Commission of Malaysia in Islamabad hosted a grand reception at the Serena Hotel to celebrate Malaysia’s 69th National Day, bringing together senior Pakistani officials, diplomats, business leaders, media representatives, Friends of Malaysia and members of the Malaysian community.
The reception was hosted by Malaysian High Commissioner to Pakistan Dato’ Mohammad Azhar Mazlan and To’ Puan Amelia Amani Lee Abdullah. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain attended the event as Guest of Honour, while Federal Minister for Board of Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, senior Pakistani officials and ASEAN heads of mission were also present.
In his welcome address, Dato’ Mohammad Azhar led fellow Malaysians in chanting “Merdeka!” seven times, recalling the historic call for independence and national unity.
Reflecting on Malaysia’s journey since independence on August 31, 1957, and the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963, the High Commissioner highlighted the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and Pakistan. He recalled Pakistan’s support during Malaysia’s formative years and acknowledged the contribution of the Pakistani community to Malaysia’s economy and society.
He said bilateral relations had gained further momentum since the two countries elevated their ties to a Strategic Partnership in 2019. Bilateral trade reached around $1.6 billion last year, he noted, expressing confidence that trade would continue to expand on the strength of institutional ties and Pakistan’s young and dynamic population.
Education and tourism were also highlighted as important areas of cooperation. With around 5,000 Pakistani students currently studying in Malaysia, Dato’ Mohammad Azhar expressed hope for greater two-way educational exchanges.
He also invited guests to attend the “Visit Malaysia 2026: Tourism and Gastronomy Festival”, being held from September 17 to 23 at Zamana Restaurant, Serena Hotel, Islamabad.
The High Commissioner concluded by extending his best wishes for the health and happiness of Pakistan’s leadership and for peace, progress and prosperity for the people of Pakistan.
Speaking on the occasion, Rana Tanveer Hussain conveyed warm greetings to the government and people of Malaysia on their National Day. He praised Malaysia’s development, particularly its progress in industrialisation, technological advancement and human capital development while preserving its cultural diversity and social values.
The minister encouraged greater Malaysian investment in Pakistan, particularly in agriculture, information technology, mining, energy and tourism.
He also appreciated Malaysia’s constructive role on international issues, including its advocacy for the Palestinian people and humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Rana Tanveer further expressed Pakistan’s appreciation for Malaysia’s continued support for its aspiration to become a full Dialogue Partner of ASEAN.
The formal proceedings concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting to mark the 69th National Day, followed by a photo session involving the Guest of Honour and attending heads of mission.
The celebration featured cultural performances by Kencana Pawana, a traditional dance troupe specially flown in from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA).
Guests also viewed video presentations highlighting Malaysia’s journey to independence, the 2026 National Day Parade in Putrajaya, Visit Malaysia 2026 and Malaysia’s educational opportunities for Pakistani students.
Adding an interactive dimension to the event, Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) and representatives of 11 Malaysian universities established information booths where guests could interact with academic representatives and learn about higher education opportunities in Malaysia.
The evening showcased Malaysia’s culture, education and hospitality while highlighting the shared commitment of Malaysia and Pakistan to further strengthening their longstanding bilateral relations.
