Pyongyang, October 9,2026: The Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), which was founded on October 10, 1945, is marking its 81st anniversary, highlighting its decades-long rule over the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
According to an article released ahead of the anniversary, the party has led the country through war, postwar reconstruction, socialist revolution and economic development, while maintaining its political system and pursuing national defense and self-reliance.
The article credited the party’s founding leader, Kim Il Sung (1912–1994), and his successor, Kim Jong Il (1942–2011), with shaping its development and consolidating its leadership over the country.
It described the party’s guiding ideology of Juche, which emphasizes independence and self-reliance, as a central factor in its continued rule. The article also attributed the party’s longevity to internal unity and discipline, public support, people-oriented policies and its focus on strengthening the military.
The WPK-led government, the article said, had guided North Korea through the 1950–1953 Korean War and subsequent reconstruction, presenting the country’s political independence, economic self-sufficiency and military capabilities as major achievements.
It further claimed that North Korea was continuing efforts to advance the comprehensive development of socialism.
The anniversary marks eight decades since the party’s establishment and provides an occasion to reflect on its role in shaping North Korea’s political, economic and military development.
