Islamabad, October 15,2026: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of visually impaired persons and ensuring their equal access to education, employment, public facilities and opportunities across all walks of life.
In his message on International White Cane Safety Day, observed on October 15, the prime minister paid tribute to the courage, determination and vitality of visually impaired persons, acknowledging their achievements and contributions to society.
He also appreciated the dedication of families, support networks and organisations working to empower visually impaired individuals and promote their inclusion in society.
The prime minister said International White Cane Safety Day highlights the importance of independence, mobility, confidence and dignity for millions of visually impaired people around the world.
He described the white cane as an essential tool that enables individuals with visual impairments to navigate their surroundings independently, participate in everyday activities and pursue greater achievements.
Shehbaz Sharif said the accomplishments of visually impaired persons in different fields deserved recognition, particularly those of career diplomat Saima Saleem, who has represented Pakistan at the United Nations, the world’s foremost forum for international diplomacy.
He said the day also provided an opportunity to strengthen individual and collective responsibility towards serving humanity and raising awareness about the rights and needs of persons with visual impairments.
The prime minister said the government remained committed to promoting the rights and equal opportunities of persons with disabilities in accordance with national priorities and the global principles of inclusion, equality and dignity.
He added that the government would work closely with provincial governments and other stakeholders to promote inclusive educational institutions, barrier-free workplaces, safe roads and footpaths, and accessible public buildings and transport facilities.
Emphasising society’s collective responsibility, he urged citizens and institutions to work together to remove physical, social and institutional barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from realising their full potential.
The prime minister also appreciated the Pakistan Association of the Blind and other organisations, institutions and individuals working to safeguard the rights, safety, independence and social inclusion of visually impaired persons.
