Parachinar, December 17, 2024: A severe medicine shortage in Kurram district, worsened by prolonged road closures, has led to the deaths of at least 29 children since October 1, 2024, according to health officials. Dr. Syed Mir Hassan Jan, medical superintendent at District Headquarters Hospital Parachinar, reported that the hospital has been unable to provide adequate treatment due to depleted medical supplies and basic healthcare resources.

Several other patients have also died due to the lack of surgical services. Dr. Jan warned of an escalating healthcare crisis unless urgent steps are taken to restore medical supplies. While a limited stock of medicines was received from Health Directorate Peshawar, it fell far short of the hospital’s needs, especially amid increased demand due to ongoing clashes.

The closure of the Thall-Parachinar Road for 69 days has hampered the transportation of essential goods, including food, fuel, and medicines, leaving the local population in critical need. The sealed Afghan border and blocked highways have exacerbated the situation.

Social activist Asadullah highlighted the looming humanitarian disaster, urging immediate efforts to reopen roads and provide food and medical assistance. Local authorities are attempting to resolve the crisis through dialogue, with a grand jirga planned to address road closures and restore access to vital resources.
