Islamabad, December 20, 2024: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed strict action against officials responsible for delays in addressing human trafficking, particularly in the aftermath of the tragic 2023 boat capsizing incident.

Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad on the prevention of human trafficking, the prime minister described the crime as a “shameful offence that has tarnished Pakistan’s global reputation.” He emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among relevant agencies to combat human trafficking effectively. The prime minister instructed authorities to identify FIA officials involved in facilitating traffickers and take immediate action against them. He also called for the swift conclusion of ongoing investigations and demanded concrete recommendations to tackle the menace comprehensively.

During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on the Greece boat tragedy and the measures being taken to curb human trafficking. It was reported that five Pakistani victims of the disaster had been identified, with efforts underway to confirm the identities of others. The Pakistan Embassy in Athens is in close contact with Greek authorities regarding the incident and can be reached through its helpline, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Crisis Management Unit is also providing assistance.

The meeting highlighted that individuals from Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, and Mandi Bahauddin districts are particularly vulnerable to human traffickers. Efforts to improve relevant legislation are underway to prevent such crimes more effectively.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, federal ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Rana Ehsan Afzal, and other senior officials. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Greece participated via video link. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eradicating human trafficking and ensuring justice for the victims.
