PM calls for stronger collaboration with UN on climate change and development

Islamabad, February 14, 2025: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has underscored the need to enhance Pakistan’s collaboration with the United Nations in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development.

During a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to tackling climate change through close cooperation with the international community and the UN.

Appreciating the efforts of the UN Country Team in Pakistan, PM Shehbaz extended his warm regards to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and commended his leadership in mobilizing global support for Pakistan during the devastating 2022 floods.

Highlighting the importance of climate financing, he stressed the need for developed nations to fulfill their commitments in supporting climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to working with the UN on various climate initiatives.

The prime minister further emphasized the need to bridge the financing gap for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He called for reforms in the global financial architecture to enhance the voice and representation of developing nations in international financial institutions.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi, PM’s Coordinator for Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam, and senior government officials.
