Lahore, March 2, 2025: Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is expected to be appointed as the national cricket team’s head coach, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) looks to stabilize the squad after a disappointing ICC Champions Trophy campaign.

According to sources, Saqlain has agreed to take on the role following discussions with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. His appointment is likely to be finalized before Pakistan’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, where the team is scheduled to play five T20Is and three ODIs from March 16 to April 5.

Saqlain previously served as Pakistan’s head coach but had earlier declined the role before the Champions Trophy, citing concerns over team selection, particularly the role of all-rounder Shadab Khan.

Following Pakistan’s winless campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025, the PCB is under pressure to restructure the squad, with senior players facing scrutiny over poor performances. The board is also considering introducing fresh talent for the New Zealand tour.

Known for his expertise in spin bowling and extensive coaching experience, Saqlain is expected to play a key role in rebuilding the team ahead of major international assignments, including the T20 World Cup 2026.

The PCB is expected to make an official announcement soon, with the goal of finalizing the coaching staff before Pakistan’s departure for New Zealand on March 12.
