Israel announces six-week ceasefire for Ramadan and Passover

Tel Aviv/Gaza, March 2, 2025: In a significant diplomatic move, Israel has declared a six-week ceasefire under the “Witkoff Framework,” named after U.S. Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff. The truce, effective immediately, aims to provide a temporary pause in hostilities during the holy months of Ramadan and Passover.

A statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office outlined the terms of the ceasefire. According to the agreement, half of the hostages—both living and deceased—will be released on the first day. The release of the remaining captives is contingent upon securing a permanent ceasefire by the end of the six-week period.

The Witkoff Framework was proposed after U.S.-mediated assessments of stalled negotiations, highlighting the need for more time to bridge gaps between the conflicting parties. The decision was made following a high-level security meeting chaired by Netanyahu, attended by the Defense Minister and senior military officials.

While Israel has agreed to the ceasefire, Hamas has rejected the framework, citing unresolved concerns. Under the terms outlined, Israel reserves the right to resume military operations if negotiations fail to yield a lasting truce. This provision has been backed by previous U.S. administrations, including a commitment from the Trump administration.

Despite Hamas’ opposition, Israel has expressed willingness to continue diplomatic efforts should Hamas reconsider its stance. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, as the ceasefire’s success could play a crucial role in future peace efforts between Israeli and Palestinian communities.
