Jason Gillespie takes PCB to court over contract dispute

Lahore, April 22, 2025: Former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has initiated legal proceedings against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), alleging non-payment of financial dues following his resignation in December 2024.

Gillespie claims the PCB failed to honor several financial commitments, including performance-related bonuses for Pakistan’s Test series win over England and an ODI victory against Australia during his tenure. He asserts that written assurances regarding these payments were not fulfilled.

The dispute has now been escalated to the International Cricket Council (ICC), although it remains unclear whether the ICC holds jurisdiction over contractual disputes between coaches and national boards.

In response, the PCB has rejected all allegations and accused Gillespie of breaching his contractual obligations by resigning without serving the required four-month notice period.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board refutes the claims made by a former head coach regarding non-payment of dues,” the board said in a statement. “His resignation without notice constitutes a clear violation of contract terms.”

PCB officials maintain that all financial obligations to Gillespie have been settled and that the board had responded to all of his communications, reiterating its legal position. While no decision has been made about counter-legal action, sources within the board say that legal avenues remain under consideration.

The relationship between Gillespie and the PCB reportedly began to deteriorate months before his departure. In October 2024, he was removed from the national selection panel and described his role as being reduced to a “matchday strategist.” In November, he was sidelined for Pakistan’s tour of South Africa, with Aaqib Javed appointed as interim head coach.

Gillespie tendered his resignation shortly after his assistant, Tim Nielsen, was informed that his contract would not be renewed — a move Gillespie described as an “undermining tactic” by PCB officials.

The legal dispute comes just one day after the PCB formally announced the search for a new head coach. Aaqib Javed, who presided over a string of poor performances during his interim tenure, will not be retained.
