Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025: An Air India passenger aircraft carrying 242 people crashed near the airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Thursday. Casualty figures have yet to be confirmed by authorities.

The crash reportedly occurred in the Meghani Nagar area, adjacent to the airport’s perimeter. While initial accounts suggest the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff, this information has not been officially verified.

In a statement issued by Air India, the airline confirmed that the flight was carrying 242 passengers, including 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. Injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals for emergency care.

Footage from the scene shows thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the crash site. Emergency response teams, including fire and rescue services, were swiftly deployed. More than five firefighting vehicles from various city divisions arrived at the location, and fire suppression efforts were promptly initiated.

“A team comprising over five fire engines has reached the site, and fire control operations are underway,” a senior official from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services Department stated.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. Both Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have launched investigations into the incident. A technical team has also been dispatched to assess the wreckage and determine the circumstances leading to the crash.

Authorities have yet to release additional details. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
